In the first Bundesliga game of 2023, league leaders Bayern Munich was hosted by RB Leipzig. What seemed to be a great matchup, this game did not disappoint. Even though neither side was as clinical or precise as everybody is used to seeing, it still made for an exciting game. Here are Bayern’s top performers from their 1-1 draw against Leipzig.
Alphonso Davies
In a game that saw quite a few defensive errors, Alphonso Davies was the shining star in Bayern’s backline. Davies hardly put a foot wrong during the game against RB Leipzig. His defensive highlight was blocking a crucial shot after a Bayern turnover. His quick thinking led to a last-second dive to block the shot.
From both an offensive and defensive standpoint, it seemed as though Davies had a new spark in his game. His link-up play in the offense was effortless and the pace at which he tracked forwards was not something we have seen all season. Overall, Alphonso Davies gave this Bayern side more impetus and assurance at both ends of the pitch against Leipzig.
Serge Gnabry
From the start, it was clear that Serge Gnabry was going to be everywhere. From contributing defensively to charging up the left side to deliver that final cross, Gnabry did it all this game. Within the first ten minutes of the match, a powerful shot from Gnabry rattled off the post, in what would have been the opening goal.
Besides that, Gnabry’s highlight of the game was his assist on the goal that gave Die Roten the lead against Leipzig. After receiving the ball from a long pass at about midfield, Gnabry darted down the left sideline and delivered an inch-perfect cross which found its way into the back of the net. Even though he had a rather quiet second half, Serge Gnabry was one of the best forwards on the pitch.
Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting
In the chaotic game against a league rival in RB Leipzig, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting was the difference maker. Though this wasn’t a high-scoring game, Choupo-Moting was the sole bright spot in the offense.
To conclude a great first-half performance from the visitors, Choupo-Moting scored a brilliant goal to give Die Roten the lead. In the 37th minute, an overhead cross from Gnabry found the foot of Choupo-Moting perfectly to score a volley from close range.
