Bayern Munich: Noussair Mazraoui set to miss the start of Ruckrunde due to illness
The last couple of months has been brutal for Bayern Munich when it comes to injuries for senior players. Ahead of the trip to Doha, Die Roten provided bad news on the availability of another senior player for the start of Ruckrunde.
Noussair Mazraoui is expected to be out for a few weeks due to illness. The Moroccan defender suffered a severe COVID infection during the winter break. He has been advised to take a complete break from training to recover from this infection.
Bayern has not provided a fixed return date for Mazraoui’s return, but Bild has reported that the former Ajax defender will need four to six weeks to completely resume training. If this report is to be believed, Mazraoui’s return should be closer to the first leg against Paris Saint- Germain in the Champions League round of 16 on February 15.
It is a massive blow for Bayern since Mazraoui started showing his best form before the World Cup break in November. He was achieving consistency in performances and steadily cementing his place in the starting XI. Mazraoui also had a great World Cup campaign with Morocco, both on an individual and collective level.
Benjamin Pavard is expected to play in the right-back position when Bundesliga resumes for Bayern against RB Leipzig on January 20. The French defender will be looking to bounce back after a disappointing World Cup 2022 with the national team. Pavard didn’t play a single minute for France after starting against Australia in the first group game.
Apart from Mazraoui, Marcel Sabitzer also didn’t travel to Doha with the first team. The Austrian midfielder is missing the winter training camp due to illness. He is expected to be fit for the start of Ruckrunde on January 20 against RB Leipzig.

Meanwhile, Manuel Neuer is recovering from a broken leg at Sabner Strasse. The German goalkeeper suffered this injury during a ski trip during the winter break. He will be missing the second half of the season due to this injury. Bayern is actively looking to sign a goalkeeper for the second half of the season.
Apart from Neuer, Lucas Hernandez will also miss Ruckrunde for Bayern. The French defender suffered a cruciate ligament injury during World Cup. The Bavarian club has signed Daley Blind on a free transfer to provide cover in central defense and left-back position. Meanwhile, Sadio Mane continues to recover from an injury to his tibia. The Senegalese forward is expected to return for Bayern in February after missing the World Cup 2022.
