The start of the winter transfer window is set to be dominated by Bayern Munich’s search for a goalkeeper. The Bavarian club is looking to sign a goalkeeper that can be number one in Ruckrunde after Manuel Neuer suffered a season-ending injury a few weeks ago. Bayern Munich is currently exploring a deal to recall Alexander Nubel from his loan spell at Monaco.

Earlier this week, Nubel expressed his desire to stay in Monaco until the end of the season. The 26-year-old goalkeeper believes that he will be guaranteed regular playing in the second half of the campaign if he stays in France.

Despite Nubel’s wish to stay in Monaco, Bayern continues to work on a deal to bring him to Bavaria in January. According to SportBild’s Tobi Altschaffl, talks continued between Die Roten and Monaco on Thursday. He reported that Hasan Salihamidzic has been holding discussions with Monaco’s sporting director Paul Mitchell to work out a deal.

Previously, one report in France suggested that Monaco doesn’t want to terminate Nubel’s loan deal in the winter window since they don’t have a replacement lined up. The German goalkeeper has been the number one for the French club in the last 18 months.

Bayern needs to agree a compensation fee with Monaco to bring Monaco back to the club in January. The Bavarian club didn’t insert a break clause in the deal, so negotiations need to take place with the French club.

The record Bundesliga champions need to resolve this stand-off with Monaco sooner rather than later. They cannot afford this deal to drag through the window. In an ideal scenario, Die Roten should have Alexander Nubel in the squad that will travel to Doha next week for a winter camp.

If there is no breakthrough in talks with Monaco, Bayern will have to turn their attention toward Borussia Monchengladbach’s Yann Sommer. The Swiss goalkeeper will not cost much since he has six months left on his contract. However, he is set to hold talks about his future with Gladbach in the coming days.

Bayern will have to move quickly for Sommer since there is significant interest from Premier League. Apart from these goalkeepers, Die Roten has been linked with PSG’s Keylor Navas and Dinamo Zagreb’s Dominik Livakovic. However, both deals may not materialise for different reasons.

PSG may not like to strengthen Bayern before their games in the Champions League during February and March. Meanwhile, Livakovic will be an expensive option after his exploits with Croatia in World Cup 2022. As things stand, Nubel or Sommer will end up being Die Roten’s number one during Ruckrunde.
