Eyebrows were raised during the summer transfer window when Bayern Munich paid close to €30 million for Mathys Tel. The French striker completed a move from Rennes in the summer to become one of the most expensive teenagers in the world.
Die Roten wanted to add more firepower to the squad after the departure of Robert Lewandowski. The Bavarian club planned to replace the Polish striker by signing Sadio Mane and Mathys Tel. Mane provides the experience in the attack, while Tel was signed to be a player for the present and future.
Tel has enjoyed a decent start to life in Bavaria. The 17-year-old forward has made 11 appearances across all competitions for Die Roten. He has managed to become the youngest scorer for Bayern in DFB Pokal and Bundesliga.
According to TZ, Bayern is pleased with the progress of Mathys Tel during the first half of the season. The Bavarian club is pleased with Tel’s approach to training. The youngster also enjoys a positive relationship with the coaching staff. Die Roten is expecting him to make a big impact in the second half of the season.
The French forward is considered a wide player by Bayern. In the long term, the German club believes that Tel could be moulded into a number nine. Julian Nagelsmann has used Tel on left-flank during Hinrunde. He has the pace and astute dribbling in his armour to trouble defenders.
Tel will get a good amount of playing time in the next couple of months since Sadio Mane is on the sidelines due to an injury. Mane is expected to be back in action by March. Die Roten is not expected to sign a forward in January, so Nagelsmann may end up giving more playing time to Tel.
Considering Tel’s explosive style of play, it will not be surprising to see him score ten goals for Bayern across all competitions by the end of the season. His goals-to-minute ratio for Bayern is impressive (averaging a goal every 87 minutes) until now, so he is a very good option to have in the squad. (Stats courtesy: Transfermarkt)

Die Roten has carefully managed the integration of Jamal Musiala and Alphonso Davies in the past three years. The Bavarian faithful will be hoping that a similar pathway is followed for Tel since he has got the talent to become one of the best forwards of his generation.
