Bayern Munich: Real Madrid eye future move for Alphonso Davies
The last couple of summer transfer windows has been painful for Bayern Munich when it comes to departures. Die Roten lost two key players to Real Madrid and Barcelona. David Alaba left Bayern to join Real Madrid on a free transfer in 2021, while Robert Lewandowski sealed a move to FC Barcelona for €50 million in 2022.
Losing out players to the two Spanish giants is a bitter pill to swallow for Bayern. They have been historic European rivals of Die Roten in the Champions League. Moreover, players leaving Bayern have helped them to achieve success. Alaba helped Real Madrid to win the Champions League title last season.
The latest report in Spain suggests that Real Madrid may end up targeting one more Bayern player in the near future. According to AS, Real Madrid is planning to move for Alphonso Davies in 2024. The Canadian full-back is seen as the long-term replacement for Marcelo.
Davies currently has three years left on his contract at Bayern. Real Madrid is counting on him to not sign a new deal at Bayern, which will allow them to open negotiations with Die Roten in 2024. The Bavarian club will risk losing him on a free transfer in 2025 if no new deal is agreed during the next three seasons.
Signing Davies does look like a pipe dream for Real Madrid. He is a crucial player for Bayern and Julian Nagelsmann. Moreover, the young Canadian full-back is well-settled in Munich. SportBild reported on Tuesday that Die Roten has no plans to sell him anytime soon, and they are ready to extend his contract beyond 2025.
Alphonso Davies moved to Bayern from Vancouver Whitecaps in January 2019 for a then-record fee for an MLS player. He was slowly integrated into the first team as an attacking player. However, things changed drastically for him in the 2019/20 campaign after a switch to the left-back position.
Davies played a key role in Bayern’s Champions League victory in 2020. The Canadian winger became the first-choice left-back for Die Roten. He has been playing in this position for the past three seasons. Nagelsmann also considers him as a left-back, so he is unlikely to play in attack for Die Roten anytime soon.

Bayern has done good work on contract extensions since losing Alaba on a free transfer to Real Madrid. They will be proactive in Davies’ case since he is likely to attract interest from other European rivals. It will not be a surprise if Die Roten hands him a new deal in the summer.
