The next few days are crucial for Bayern Munich when it comes to sorting out the goalkeeping department of the squad for the second half of the season. Die Roten is looking to get another keeper in January after Manuel Neuer was ruled out for the rest of the season due to a freak injury on a ski trip.
Borussia Monchengladbach’s Yann Sommer has emerged as one of the top candidates to become Bayern’s number one in Ruckrunde. However, signing the Swiss goalkeeper will not be straightforward for Rekordmeister since there is significant interest from Premier League.
According to Bild, Manchester United and Bayern Munich are the two big clubs interested in signing Sommer. Gladbach has not given up hope of extending his contract, as talks are set to take place in the next few days. If Sommer refuses to sign a new deal, Gladbach is open to listening to offers in January instead of losing him for nothing in the summer.
Bild believes a fee of €5 million will be enough to clinch the signing of Sommer from Gladbach in January. Sommer is set to hold talks with Gladbach in the coming days before making a firm decision on his future.
The Swiss international is the transfer solution for Bayern if they fail to recall Alexander Nubel from his loan spell in Monaco. The Bavarian club has touched base with Monaco, but the German goalkeeper will need assurances over game time before making a decision on returning to Bavaria.
Recalling Nubel will be a much better option for Die Roten than signing Sommer from Gladbach. The next five months will give a fair assessment of Nubel as Bayern’s number one. If he excels in this position, then Die Roten will have to find an arrangement where Neuer and Nubel get adequate playing time from next season.
Sommer has been a very good goalkeeper in the Bundesliga for Gladbach. He will do well at Bayern, but he is not a long-term solution for Neuer’s replacement. The Swiss international is just a year younger than Neuer. The injury to Neuer gives an ideal opportunity to test Nubel in crucial situations.

There is likely to be clarity on the goalkeeping situation early next week. The transfer window will be open, and players will resume training at Sabner Strasse. Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic will be hoping to sort a deal for either Nubel or Sommer before first team leaves for the winter camp in Doha.
