Bayern Munich go deep in the Champions League

After the triumph in Lisbon two years ago, Bayern Munich has found it difficult to go deep in the Champions League. They struggled against Villarreal last season in the quarter-final, while PSG got the better of them in the same round during the 2020/21 campaign.

Die Roten needs to go deeper in the European competitions, considering the strength of their squad. They have been flawless in the group stages of the competition this year, but a similar level of performance has not been replicated in the knockout rounds during the last two campaigns.

Die Roten has the ideal mix of senior and young players to do well in the Champions League. Manuel Neuer and Thomas Muller are entering the twilight of their career, so they have very few opportunities left to win this competition for the third time. Unfortunately, Neuer will not be able to contribute in CL this season, but Muller will be looking to make up for World Cup disappointment with Germany. Meanwhile, the other senior group of players in the squad (Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka, Kingsley Coman, Serge Gnabry, Leroy Sane, etc) are entering in prime years of their careers.

Julian Nagelsmann also needs a statement win in the Champions League to improve his impressive coaching credentials. It is going to be a challenging road to the final for Bayern as they face favourites PSG in the round of 16 when CL resumes in February. The Bavarian faithful would like to see a solid performance in these two games against PSG, which can eventually become the springboard for success in the competition.
