Morocco was the biggest surprise package in the World Cup 2022 as they managed to finish fourth in the tournament. It was an incredible run of results and performances for the African country as they knocked out Spain and Portugal to reach the semi-finals.
Noussair Mazraoui was the sole representative from the Bayern squad in the Morocco squad. The former Ajax right-back excelled in the left-back position for Morocco during the tournament. Apart from a below-average performance against France in the semi-final, Mazraoui did a solid job in an unusual position.
Mazraoui also showed great mental strength to bounce back from the injury he suffered against Croatia in the first game of the competition. He was stretchered off during this game, but he recovered in time to guide Morocco to a historic win against Belgium.

The 25-year-old full-back can make a difference in the final third since he is very secure in possession. However, the World Cup tested his defensive awareness as Morocco hardly dominated possession. Mazraoui’s performances for Morocco didn’t grab headlines, but he did a very efficient job that helped his team to make history. His performances in the left-back position for Morocco will give Julian Nagelsmann more tactical flexibility in the full-back position.
