Bayern Munich: Cody Gakpo set for talks after World Cup
It is pretty evident that Bayern Munich is set to strengthen the attack in the next summer transfer window. Courtesy of the German club’s reported strong interest in Harry Kane, several other attacking players in Europe will be linked with a move to Bavaria.
Cody Gakpo is currently one of the in-form forwards in Europe. He started the World Cup 2022 on a strong note by scoring a goal in each of the first two group games. The Dutch forward is expected to leave PSV Eindhoven sooner rather than later. The latest update from the Netherlands suggests Bayern Munich could be in the mix for him.
According to VI (via iMiaSanMia), Gakpo’s representatives are set to hold talks with numerous clubs after the World Cup, including Bayern. The defending Bundesliga champions will significant competition from England if they have a genuine interest in the Dutch forward. PSV will be looking to get a fee of over €50 million for the 23-year-old forward.
Gakpo was heavily linked with Manchester United, Leeds United, and Southampton during the summer transfer window. He had an agreement with Man United, but the Red Devils eventually moved for Ajax winger Antony.
The disappointment of a failed transfer to Old Trafford didn’t affect Gakpo since he has been enjoying an incredible run of form for PSV. He has scored 15 goals this season for PSV across all competitions. The Dutch international can play across the front three, but he is at his best from the left flank. (Stats courtesy: Whoscored)
Despite Gakpo’s incredible talent, it makes no sense for Bayern to make a move for him. The Dutch forward’s player may approach Die Roten, but it would be a massive surprise if anything goes beyond preliminary talks. Rekordmeister needs a striker instead of a wide player. Gakpo can play as a number nine, but he is currently excelling as a wide forward. Die Roten is very well stacked in this position.
Moreover, Gakpo is expected to leave PSV in the winter transfer window. Despite the serious injury of Sadio Mane, Bayern has ruled out making signings in January. The Bavarian club will look for internal solutions to compensate for the absence of Mane.

Considering Gakpo’s recent form for club and country, he could end up becoming the expensive signing of the winter window. Bayern Munich has other areas to address, so they are unlikely to splurge cash on a wide forward in January. The Bavarian club is expected to look for a striker in the summer, with Spurs forward Kane emerging as the top transfer target.
