The early optimism of the season has evaporated at Bayern Munich in the last three weeks. The defending Bundesliga champions suffered three consecutive draws against Borussia Monchengladbach, VfB Stuttgart, and Union Berlin. The performances in these three games were as poor as the results.

Things went from bad to worse for Bayern on Saturday as they ended the run of three draws in the league with a defeat away at Augsburg. Die Roten struggled offensively in the Bavarian derby, failing to add the finishing touches to the promising moves.

At the other end of the pitch, Bayern conceded several big chances to Augsburg. They were eventually punished through a routine setpiece move by the home side. The defeat against Augsburg made sure that Rekordmeister slipped to fifth place in the points table, three points behind league leaders Union Berlin.

The international break is set to be dominated by criticism of Bayern’s performances in the Bundesliga over the last three weeks. The performances from Die Roten deserve constructive criticism. While talking to Sky Sports on Saturday, Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic expressed concerns about the team’s performances in the Bundesliga.

"“We haven’t won in four games. I’m a bit concerned. We didn’t finish several chances and conceded few chances. We can’t win like that in the Bundesliga. We have problems against physical teams. Now there are no more excuses, now we need wins.”"

Die Roten started the league campaign on fire by scoring 15 goals in three league games. They are not able to execute a lot of good things in the last four league games, which they did in an emphatic manner at the start of the season.

There is no fluidity in the front four, as they end up messing up so many promising moves in the final third. Meanwhile, the efficiency in front of the goal has dropped significantly. Sadio Mane is being used as a wide forward despite delivering performances in the number nine role at the start of the season. The Senegalese forward also thrived in the number nine role for Liverpool in the second half of the last campaign.

Meanwhile, the team is not a solid defensive unit. Die Roten is conceding too many chances at the moment. They need to control the game better and reduce the chances for the opposition. As long as Bayern doesn’t become a resolute defensive unit, there will be pressure on the attack to score loads of goals to win games.

The only silver lining for Bayern in the last three weeks has been the performances and results in the cup competitions. They kept clean sheets against Barcelona and Inter Milan in the Champions League and booked a place in the next round of the DFB Pokal. Julian Nagelsmann needs to find a way to bring the cup form in the Bundesliga after the international break.
