Bayern Munich will have a big decision to make in the goalkeeping department next summer. Manuel Neuer has signed a new deal as he continues to show no signs of decline. However, Bayern will have to sort out the long-term future of this position while going forward.
The record Bundesliga champions consider Alexander Nubel part of their long-term plans. The young German goalkeeper has been delivering solid performances in the last 12 months at Monaco. He has started the new campaign in the same manner, becoming one of the key players for the French club.
Alexander Nubel will be returning to Bavaria next summer when his two-year loan spell at Monaco comes to an end. Die Roten is planning to open contract talks with the young goalkeeper, but talks are unlikely to be straightforward due to the presence of Neuer in the squad.
Nubel has no plans to sit on the bench when his loan spell comes to an end with Monaco. While talking to Kicker this week, Alexander Nubel has provided more clarity about his plans going forward. He is not ruling out a move to another club, but the German keeper has no plans to sit on the bench at Die Roten.
"“Returning to Bayern while Manu is still there is definitely out of question for me. I certainly won’t do that. I can rule out sitting on the bench at Bayern again.”“I’m currently very happy here and feel a great trust. And Monaco is not a small address in Europe. I’m not ruling out anything, Monaco or elsewhere. There are many options.”"
Nubel also insisted that signing a contract extension at Bayern is not a topic of discussion for him. Bayern was planning to open talks with the young goalkeeper later this year, but it will take massive assurances from the club regarding his playing time to convince him for a contract extension. His current deal in Bavaria expires in 2025.
Die Roten had beaten competition from various European clubs to sign Nubel from Schalke on a free transfer in 2020. He spent his first season in Bavaria on the bench as Neuer played most of the games. Nubel got very limited playing time in 2020/21, which forced him to look for a loan move.
Neuer will be 37 by the end of the current campaign, so Die Roten has to be proactive in finding a long-term successor for him. Nubel has done well with Monaco, so it makes sense to give him an opportunity to prove himself as Die Roten’s long-term number one.

The only possible way for Neuer and Nubel to stay at Bayern is by giving both an equal amount of playing time. The two German goalkeepers will play equal an amount of games in the Bundesliga and cup competitions. It remains to be seen whether Neuer agrees to this arrangement as he remains hungry to play regularly. The coming months will give a clear idea about Nubel’s long-term future at Bayern.
