The start of the season for Bayern Munich was the brilliance of the fluid front four, while the last three league games raised doubts about Die Roten’s defense. The defending Bundesliga champions conceded poor goals in the last three league games and ended up with three consecutive draws.

Going into the game against Barcelona on Tuesday, Bayern’s defense was under immense pressure. The Spanish club has enjoyed a very good start to the season. Moreover, former Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski has hit the ground running for Barcelona with nine goals across all competitions. Die Roten’s defense was expected to be under pressure against the Catalan club.

On full-time whistle at Allianz Arena on Tuesday, Bayern’s defense received plaudits for turning up against Barcelona. They suffered in the first half but managed to stop Barcelona from scoring. The hosts saw out the game to a great effect after scoring two quick goals early in the second half.

Dayot Upamecano was one of the best players for Bayern against Barcelona on Tuesday. The French defender played a crucial role in keeping the clean sheet against the Spanish side. While talking to Bild after the game, Upamecano insisted that there is much more to come from him despite a complete performance against Barcelona. The French defender also explained how he and Lucas Hernandez managed to keep Lewandowski quiet.

"“I knew exactly what Robert was doing. So we could contain him. He’s a world-class player, but Lucas and I were 100% focused – right up to the last second.”“Was it my best game? I don’t know. Things can always be better, I can keep improving. We have to keep going like this.”"

Dayot Upamecano won most of the duels against Barcelona. The challenge for him is to find consistency in his performances. He has struggled to deliver solid performances week in week out over the last 12 months. The French international has shown glimpses of his potential, but he needs to translate it into consistent performances.

The French defender will have a big role to play for Bayern in the coming weeks after Hernandez suffered a serious adductor injury. Dayot Upamecano is expected to play consistently with Matthijs de Ligt in the heart of the defense. The young defenders will be looking to forge a solid partnership and end Bayern’s defensive woes in the Bundesliga.

Julian Nagelsmann will be pleased with the way his team defended when they were under pressure against Barcelona. The clean sheet against the Spanish club will give a lot of confidence to the German team. It can form the ideal platform for them to kick on and deliver consistent performances at the back. The Bavarian club’s attention will now switch to Saturday’s league game against Augsburg. A win in the league before the international break will be a boost to the team’s confidence.
