After a long wait, the UEFA Champions League has finally reached its return. Being placed in the “Group of Death”, Bayern Munich have an exciting six matches in front of them. On Matchday one, the defending German champions were hosted by Inter Milan. In a game that, on paper, seemed to be very challenging, Bayern cruised to victory. Here are Bayern’s top performers from their 2-0 win against Inter.
Lucas Hernandez
With a clean sheet and a strong defensive performance, Lucas Hernandez was the best player in the back line for Die Roten. The partnership with Matthijs de Ligt allowed Hernandez to be the first to the ball in every Inter attack. His pace and defensive awareness were the sole reasons that the opposition was only able to record two successful shots on target.
Hernandez found himself in forward play more than enough times, and actually recorded an elegant shot on target for himself. A great way to open up this Champions League campaign for the French international.
Joshua Kimmich
Despite coming away with a black eye, Joshua Kimmich will be incredibly happy with his performance. Game in and game out, Kimmich is a brick wall in the midfield, and facing Inter was no exception. The moment Bayern’s offense lost the ball, Kimmich was the first to chase and win it back.
An incredible defensive performance was capped off with a world-class assist in Bayern’s first goal. A long ball from behind the center line found Leroy Sane streaking forward past Inter’s defense. In the game against Inter, Joshua Kimmich led his team to a comfortable victory, both offensively and defensively.
Leroy Sane
When watching this game, the entire offense revolved around one man— Leroy Sane. Whether it was his darting runs, his finesse shots, or being Bayern’s target man, Sane did it all. His masterful performance kicked off in the 25th minute after scoring the game’s opening goal, which all started with one of the most brilliant first touches you’ll ever see.

Even though the second goal will go down as an own goal for Inter’s D’Ambrosio, Sane would like to claim it for himself. After a great link-up play with Kingsley Coman, Sane managed to chip the keeper, only to be knocked in for an own goal. Leading from the front, Leroy Sane rightfully earns this Champions League Man of the Match.
After this exciting mid-week match-up, Bayern are will be looking to turn things around in the Bundesliga. After two consecutive draws, Bayern will shoot for the win against Stuttgart on September 10.
