Bayern Munich: Takeaways from massive win against Bochum on matchday 3
Competition for places in attack is benefitting Bayern
After the departure of Robert Lewandowski this summer, Julian Nagelsmann has decided to go ahead with a fluid front four. The attack now consists of two wide players, while the other two forwards operate in the central position. All four players keep switching positions, which causes a lot of problems for the opposition.
In the current squad, seven players are competing for four attacking positions in the starting XI. Nagelsmann used a front quartet of Jamal Musiala, Sadio Mane, Serge Gnabry, and Thomas Muller in the first three games of the season. All of them excelled in their roles, which allowed Nagelsmann to stick with the same personnel in the attack.
Leroy Sane was left out of the starting XI, while Kingsley Coman was watching from the sidelines since he was serving a suspension. Both players were facing a challenge to break into the starting lineup due to the form of other forwards. However, injury problems to Gnabry and Musiala presented Sane and Coman with an opportunity to start against Bochum.
Sane and Coman grabbed this chance with both hands and showed their hunger to excel this season. Both wingers scored once against Bochum, while Coman also got two assists to his name. The overall performance of both wingers was solid. Meanwhile, Serge Gnabry came off the bench in the second half to score the final goal for Die Roten. Strong competition in attacking positions is getting the best out of all forwards and giving a welcome selection headache to Nagelsmann.
