Ever since Bayern’s Champions League winning run in 2020, the team has struggled defensively. From not having a solidified right-back to having an extensive list of injuries to center-backs, Bayern’s defense needed a good addition this summer. After the signing of Upamecano last season did not pay out as much as anticipated and the departure of German international Niklas Sule, Bayern decided to go all out to sign Matthijs de Ligt from Juventus.

After his break-out campaign for Ajax in 2019, de Ligt has been nothing short of exciting defensive talent in Europe. He has the perfect frame to dominate duels against the best forwards in Europe. The Dutch defender will be able to compliment Lucas Hernandez perfectly in the heart of the defense.

De Ligt is a huge signing for the Bavarians and could be the answer to all their defensive problems. He has already made an immediate impact in Bayern’s preseason game against DC United, where he scored a beautiful half-volley.

The Dutch defender also has leadership qualities since he captained Ajax at the age of 19. After learning from some of the best defenders at Juventus, de Ligt can well become the leader at the back for Bayern. He could well turn out to be a great investment in the long run.
