Benjamin Pavard thriving with competition in the right-back position

A couple of weeks ago, Benjamin Pavard leaving Bayern looked like a real possibility. The French defender shrugged off the question about his future after the second pre-season friendly against Manchester City in the USA. The situation has now completely turned on its head after the terrific start to the season for Pavard. He is likely to stay in Bavaria.

The French defender was one of the standout players for Bayern in the win against Frankfurt. He showed great awareness to score Die Roten’s second goal on Friday. His ball-striking ability is probably the best amongst defenders at Bayern.

Apart from scoring the goal, Pavard was very astute defensively against Frankfurt. He consistently anticipated danger when Frankfurt was trying to execute counter-attacks. The Frenchman made four interceptions, most for a Bayern player on the pitch.

In terms of going forward, Pavard was linking up well with wide forwards on his side. He was tidy on the ball, but there is still scope for improvement when it comes to delivering crosses. While the game against Leipzig was a mixed bag for Pavard, he certainly stepped up in the win against Frankfurt. The presence of more competition in the right-back position is definitely pushing Pavard to get better. (Stats courtesy: Whoscored)
