The next few days could see a significant arrival at Bayern Munich to improve the defensive department of the senior squad. Die Roten has held talks with Juventus to sign Matthijs de Ligt. The Dutch defender has already given the green light to join Rekordmeister. The German Champions are expected to return with an improved bid to complete the transfer.

The arrival of de Ligt is not going to affect the future of other central defenders in the squad. During the weekend, 90min in the UK reported that Chelsea could explore a move for Dayot Upamecano since de Ligt is arriving at Bayern. However, German media has quickly squashed this rumour.

According to Sky Sports in Germany and Christian Falk, Bayern has no intention to part ways with Upamecano in the current transfer window. The speculation around Upamecano was also fueled by the fact that he recently switched agents. Die Roten firmly insists that the French defender is in plans for next season. Moreover, Chelsea is close to signing Kalidou Koulibaly and Nathan Ake.

Upamecano arrived in Bavaria last summer from RB Leipzig. Die Roten managed to beat numerous top clubs in Europe to seal the signing of the French defender. Upamecano managed to hit the ground running straight away as he enjoyed a very good start to last season.

As the season progressed, Dayot Upamecano did witness a dip in his performances. He has to iron out the mistakes he tends to do off the ball. In terms of playing out from the back, Upamecano is one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga. It would have taken a strange turn of events for him to leave Bavaria after just one season.

Dayot Upamecano is likely to partner de Ligt in the heart of the defense for Die Roten, provided the latter completes the transfer. The French international will be looking to deliver consistent performances in the next few months to book a place for the World Cup in November.

Meanwhile, there has been uncertainty over the future of Benjamin Pavard at Bayern. The French defender has always insisted on playing in the heart of the defense. The upcoming season would have given him a fair amount of opportunities in central defense, but the arrival of de Ligt will mean Pavard faces an uphill task to play in his preferred role.

Pavard may also see his playing time reduced significantly next season due to the arrival of Noussair Mazraoui. The Moroccan defender is likely to start the season for Die Roten as their first choice right-back. Pavard’s situation is one to keep an eye on for the rest of the transfer window.
