Systems used by Julian Nagelsmann
The pre-season is the ideal time for coaches to work on new systems and methods since there is a lot of work done on the training ground. Julian Nagelsmann largely played 4-2-3-1 last season. It was a system familiar to the squad as Hansi Flick also used it for two seasons. Nagelsmann is reportedly planning to use two different systems next season.
The first suggestion by the German media is that Nagelsmann may use a three-man midfield more frequently next season. Thomas Muller has thrived in the number ten role, so it will be intriguing to see how Nagelsmann looks to mould the current squad in a 4-3-3 formation.
Apart from using 4-3-3, Nagelsmann is also reportedly planning to use a three-man defense next season. It was the frequently used system by Nagelsmann at RB Leipzig and Hoffenheim. The German coach was able to use 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 systems to a great effect at his previous clubs.
With the acquisition of Noussair Mazraoui, Nagelsmann has wing-backs on both flanks to deploy three at the back. The pre-season games will be the right opportunity to implement both these formations. Nagelsmann wants to improve the counter-pressing of the team, so it will be intriguing to see if he opts for change in systems to achieve this improvement.
