The newly installed hierarchy at Bayern Munich has been doing a good job this summer. They have managed to strengthen the squad with three crucial signings. The club chiefs are also set to fulfill the promise of discussing with fans about the commercial deal with Qatar Airways.

According to Sky Sports, Bayern chiefs Oliver Kahn and Herbert Hainer will be talking to fans regarding the commercial deal with Qatar Airways. Along with fans, representatives of the Qatar World Cup OC, human rights organizations, and former members of the federal government will also be present at this meeting.

The Bavarian faithful has been showing discontent against Bayern’s association with Qatar Airways during games. They have been coming up with huge banners at games criticising the club chiefs for engaging in the deal with Qatar Airways.

Along with fans, there was also discontent about this deal during the last annual general meeting. One of the reports in Germany has also suggested that some of the players in the first team have shown discontent with the possible renewal of this commercial deal. The current agreement with Qatar Airways will expire in 2023.

The discontent amongst fans regarding this deal is largely due to Qatar’s troubling record of human rights abuse. Previous Bayern chiefs such as Uli Hoeness have been critical of the state-backed clubs, so doing business with a state-backed entity from Qatar also doesn’t make sense.

The upcoming Qatar World Cup is also facing a lot of backlash from football fans across the globe. The whole process of giving the hosting rights to Qatar has been under the scanner. Meanwhile, there have been multiple reports suggesting human rights abuse taking place during the preparations for this World Cup.

It is a welcome move from Bayern to include fans in this meeting. The fans will continue to oppose the deal, while the representatives from Qatar will try to justify it. It will be intriguing to see whether Bayern chiefs decide with the heart over the brain regarding this business deal. The German Champions need commercial deals to stay competitive in the game, but making ethical decisions is also equally crucial.

In an ideal scenario, Bayern sees out the current deal with Qatar airways and starts looking for a new travelling sponsor. Bringing an end to this deal will please fans, and it will be an ethically right decision. It will also further strengthen the relationship between fans and Bayern Munich.
