Before the start of the summer transfer window, Bayern Munich decided to sort out the future of goalkeepers in the first team. Manuel Neuer signed a new deal to stay in Bavaria at least until 2024, while Sven Ulreich also extended his stay at the club by a year.
The Bavarian club was briefly linked with Arminia Bielefeld’s Stefan Ortega to replace Ulreich. However, the club hierarchy eventually decided to stick with Ulreich as number two for one more season. Christian Fruchtl is expected to leave Bavaria, so a young goalkeeper from youth teams is likely to be promoted to the first team for the role of third-choice goalkeeper.
Bayern also has Alexander Nubel on their books. He will not be returning to Bavaria this summer after a productive year at Monaco. Nubel will be completing his two-year loan spell at Monaco in 2023. The young German goalkeeper will be looking to keep getting better in Ligue 1 next season.
The German champions still have Alexander Nubel in their long-term plans. They had managed to beat interest from other clubs in 2020 to sign him as a free agent from Schalke. While talking to SportBild (via GGFN) on Tuesday, Hasan Salihamidzic admitted that Die Roten would soon open talks with Nubel for a new long-term deal.
"“Bayern are planning with Alexander Nübel on the long term, because we believe in his quality and we want to secure the goalkeeping position in the future.”“We can very well imagine extending his contract. We’ll speak to Alex and his agent and find the best solution for him and for the club. We’re happy that Manuel Neuer extended until 2024 and we’re very happy with Alex’s development. We hope and think he’ll confirm.”"
Earlier this year, Nubel hinted at a permanent departure from Bayern if Neuer ends up signing a new deal. After getting consistent playing time at Monaco last season, Nubel wants adequate playing time when he returns to Bavaria in 2023. The German club will be hoping that Nubel continues to polish rough edges to his game next season at Monaco.
The only way Bayern can convince Alexander Nubel to stay at the club is by giving him assurances about playing time. They will have to convince Manuel Neuer to share playing time with Nubel to keep the young shot-stopper at the club.
Neuer has shown no signs of slowing down, but eventually, Die Roten will have to make a tough decision and think about the long-term future of the club. After the 2022/23 campaign, Neuer may have to accept that he will not start every game. Nubel should get an ample number of opportunities to impress in the Bavarian colours.

Nubel is unlikely to be in a rush to sign a new deal. He will most likely assess his future when he returns from Monaco next summer. The Bavarian club may have to come up with a solid plan to convince the young goalkeeper or look elsewhere to find a long-term replacement for Neuer.
