The work on summer transfers has begun at Bayern Munich as the German club looks to strengthen the squad in multiple areas. The center-back void left by Niklas Sule was expected to be filled by Benjamin Pavard, but Julian Nagelsmann is pushing for the signing of a new center-back. It does look like the German manager may get his wish fulfilled.

According to TZ, Bayern has opened talks with Monaco to sign Guillermo Maripan. The German media outlet insists that the talks are well advanced between the two clubs for the 28-year-old Chilean defender.

Maripan’s current deal at Monaco is set to expire in 2024, so Bayern will not have to pay a crazy fee to complete this transfer. The Bavarian club also enjoys a good relationship with Monaco after negotiating Alexander Nubel’s loan deal in the last transfer window.

The Chilean defender is considered to be the perfect profile to compliment other defenders at Die Roten. He can be the leader in the back four for Rekordmeister that they have missed this season after the departures of Jerome Boateng and David Alaba during last summer’s transfer window.

Guillermo Maripan has featured in 35 games for Monaco across all competitions. He is solid on the ball, which makes him ideal for a team that will dominate possession in most games. The other German media outlets are yet to report Die Roten’s interest in the Chilean defender, so the report from TZ can be taken with a pinch of salt.

However, it will not be surprising to see Rekordmeister chasing such kind of deal. Hasan Salihamidzic reportedly made a last-ditch attempt to sign Antonio Rudiger, but the German defender had already agreed terms with Real Madrid. Going by Salihamidzic’s efforts to sign Rudiger at the last minute, it does look like Die Roten is looking to add a center-back to the squad.

The arrival of a new central defender may impact the future of Tanguy Nianzou. The French defender was expected to stay in Bavaria next season and play as the fourth center-back in the squad. However, he will get very minimal playing time after the arrival of a player like Maripan in the next few months.

The Bavarian club also needs to make a decision regarding Chris Richards. The young US defender had a productive loan spell at Hoffenheim. Instead of sending him out on another loan, Bayern will look to cash in. The next few weeks will give a clear indication of how things are shaping in the defensive department of the squad.
