Bayern Munich will not sign a new goalkeeper in summer
The end of the season continues to see Bayern Munich starting preparations for the next campaign. After sealing the Bundesliga title, Die Roten is looking to renew the contracts of key players. On Saturday, the Bavarian club confirmed the contract extension of Sven Ulreich. The German shot-stopper’s new deal will see him stay at the club at least until the end of next season.
Ulreich’s new contract will mean that Bayern will not be signing a new goalkeeper in the summer. It was reported in Germany that Ulreich might leave in the summer as a free transfer, and the club would look for a new number two. Arminia Bielefeld’s Stefan Ortega was heavily linked with a move to Bavaria, but the club ended up sticking with Ulreich.
Sven Ulreich returned to Die Roten last summer after spending one season at Hamburg. He left Bavaria after the arrival of Alexander Nubel in 2020. However, Bayern decided to bring him back to the club in 2021 as Nubel went out on loan to Monaco. Nubel will return from his loan spell at the end of next season.
Ulreich has been a fine goalkeeper for Die Roten over the years. He has done well to fill in for Neuer whenever it is needed. Moreover, he shares a very good camaraderie with Manuel Neuer, which leads to healthy competition. All these factors do suggest that giving him an extension was the right decision by Rekordmeister.
The German champions are also expected to offer a new deal to Neuer. The veteran German goalkeeper has shown no signs of decline as he continues to deliver quality performances. He is likely to get a year-long extension just like Thomas Muller. Neuer’s current deal is set to expire at the end of next season.
Meanwhile, Nubel has hinted toward a permanent transfer away from Bayern in 2023. The young German goalkeeper is playing consistently for Monaco. He believes that coming back to Bavaria to sit on the bench will not make sense. Rekordmeister still sees him as the long-term replacement for Neuer, but Nubel will need assurances over playing time to stay at the club.

In terms of departures, Christian Fruchtl is likely to seal a permanent move away from Die Roten in the summer. Ron-Thorben Hoffmann is also expected to leave the club after spending a season on loan at Sunderland. Die Roten will promote a younger goalkeeper from the reserves in the first team to fill the third slot for a shot-stopper.
