Bayern Munich: Robert Lewandowski wants La Liga move to win Ballon d’Or
After clinching the Bundesliga title, Bayern Munich will be turning their attention to strengthening the squad for next season. The Bavarian club is expected to be active in the transfer window. Along with adding fresh faces to the squad, Die Roten is also looking to extend the contracts of players such as Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry.
The German champions will be facing tricky negotiations with both forwards. Lewandowski is reportedly looking to leave the club in the summer, while there has been no breakthrough in negotiations with Gnabry.
The immediate issue to address is Lewandowski’s future. After deliberating over talks throughout the season, the club hierarchy finally met Pini Zahavi to assess the situation. Lewandowski was unhappy with the first meeting on Thursday since he didn’t get clarity about his future.
Barcelona is actively looking to sign Lewandowski in the upcoming transfer window. The Spanish club has been reportedly working on this deal for months. While talking to Spanish radio El Larguero (via iMiaSanMia), Javi Martinez revealed that Lewandowski wants to join Barcelona to win Ballon d’Or. The former Bayern midfielder insists that Lewandowski has a better chance of winning the award by excelling in La Liga.
"“I think there’s a possibility he goes to Barça. Lewy believes he would have won a BdO or two if he played in Spain, that’s why he wants to try. He has the feeling he deserved the Ballon d’Or. It’s not the same playing in the Spanish League, at Barça or Madrid, as it is in the Bundesliga.”"
Robert Lewandowski has been really unfortunate to miss out on Ballon d’Or award in the last two years. After winning the treble with Bayern in 2020, he was favourite to win the award. However, France Football decided to cancel the award due to the pandemic.
The Polish striker ended up finishing second in the list last year as Lionel Messi ended up lifting the award. Lewandowski had an incredible year on a personal level, so he was really unlucky to not get the prestigious award. He has managed to score consistently this season, but his lack of a Champions League trophy may decrease his chances of winning the award.
Players from Spanish clubs have dominated the Ballon d’Or award in the last decade, so it is not surprising to see Lewandowski looking for a move to La Liga to get his hands on this award. Previously, Lewandowski was heavily linked to Real Madrid. Los Blancos has not been linked with a move for him this time, but Barcelona definitely considers him an important player to sign.
