After the Champions League elimination against Villarreal on Tuesday, Bayern Munich head coach Julian Nagelsmann is expected to get a lot of criticism. It is the nature of this role that defeats in the Champions League are always going to be magnified.

Nagelsmann has taken complete responsibility for Die Roten’s poor results against Villarreal across two legs. The latest report from Germany is not positive about Nagelsmann as it suggests that his authority is undermined in the current squad.

According to Sport1, two senior players at Bayern are not convinced by tactics and training methods of Julian Nagelsmann. The German coach is keen to change things at the club from a tactical and personnel point of view, but he would need support from the hierarchy and players. As things stand, Sport1 insists that two senior players are not on the same page with the German coach.

The elimination against Villarreal was a massive upset since Rekordmeister was the overwhelming favourite to book a place in the semi-final of the Champions League. A defeat of such importance is bound to create some sort of unwanted noise about the head coach in the media.

The report from Sport1 could have substance, but publicly most players have spoken glowingly about Nagelsmann since the start of the season. The German coach also ended up playing a big role in convincing Coman to stay in Bavaria. The French winger was expected to leave in the summer after talks for a new deal had reached an impasse.

Under Nagelsmann, there has been a notable improvement in the performances of several individual players. Niklas Sule got back to his best this season after an underwhelming campaign last year. Leroy Sane was able to regain his best form after Nagelsmann moved him to the right side of the attack.

Obviously, Julian Nagelsmann is responsible for the collective performance of the team. Ruckrunde has not been exactly productive for the German coach after a very good Hinrunde. The German coach has struggled to mask the weaknesses of the squad and managed to worsen it with some strange decisions in team and formation selection. He needs to improve tactically while going forward to make sure that there is consistency in performances.

Despite the cup failures this season, the talk of Nagelsmann’s job under threat shouldn’t be a threat. He is on track to helping the team to retain the Bundesliga title. Things are likely to improve gradually next season when the squad is strengthened in the summer. Bayern hierarchy handed him a five-year deal, which definitely suggests that early setbacks are not going to alter their plans/views about the German coach.
