The goalkeeping department at Bayern Munich was expected to undergo a couple of changes in the summer. Alexander Nubel was expected to leave in the summer, but he will be continuing the loan spell at Monaco. He will make a decision on his future in Bavaria at the end of next season.

Along with Nubel, Sven Ulreich was also expected to leave at the end of the current campaign. The German goalkeeper’s contract ends in June, and Die Roten has been heavily linked with a move for Arminia Bielefeld’s Stefan Ortega. However, the latest report in Germany suggests that there is a change in the plan for the goalkeeping department at Bayern.

According to SportBild, Bayern is set to extend the contract of Ulreich and keep him beyond the current campaign. It remains to be seen what has caused a change of heart for Die Roten. Ulreich has been reportedly eager to stay in Bavaria.

Ever since arriving in Bavaria at the start of the 2015/16 season, Ulreich has done a fine job in deputising Neuer. The German goalkeeper filled in for Neuer during 2017/18 when Neuer was ruled out for a long time due to a foot injury. His performances in the absence of Neuer earned him a contract renewal.

After the signing of Nubel in 2020, Sven Ulreich left Bavaria to play for Hamburg. The German goalkeeper returned to Die Roten after a season when Nubel went out on loan to Monaco. Filling in for Neuer is a difficult job for any goalkeeper in the world, but Ulreich has done remarkably well over the years.

Signing a new number two will bring further complications for the coaching staff. The new goalkeeper may need more assurances to play regularly, which is not going to happen in the presence of Neuer. Sven Ulreich will continue to do well in this role, so it is a no-brainer to give him a new deal.

Meanwhile, Die Roten is expected to extend Neuer’s contract. The German goalkeeper has hinted at ending his career in Bavaria. Despite turning 35, Neuer continues to remain a key player for Rekordmeister on and off the pitch. His leadership qualities are also very crucial for the current squad. Since both parties are keen on an extension, negotiations are likely to be concluded soon.

Nubel has decided to complete his two-year loan spell in Monaco. The young German goalkeeper will have to consider leaving Bavaria in 2023 if he is not guaranteed adequate playing time. Bayern still considers him the ideal candidate to succeed Neuer, so it will be interesting to see how they handle his situation.
