Bayern Munich: Salihamidzic outlines role of Nagelsmann in talent development
Bayern Munich is one of the few top clubs in Europe that boasts a rich history of bringing through young talent from the academy into the first team. The Bavarian club did have a spell of a few years when very few young players established themselves in the first team, but normality has resumed in the last few years.
The last few years have seen Die Roten recruiting aggressively at the youth level from different parts of the world. The success stories of Alphonso Davies and Jamal Musiala are a result of efficient recruitment from Bayern at the youth level.
Hasan Salihamidzic has a big role to play in the recruitment and development of young talent at Bayern. The former midfielder was appointed as sporting director in 2017. Since he arrived at the club, there have been some great success stories in terms of getting young players integrated into the first team.
The first team head coach also has a big role to play in the development and integration of young players in the first team. While talking to TZ, Salihamidzic admitted that Nagelsmann is very much involved across different age groups at the club. He also insisted that the development of young players is a crucial criteria when appointing the head coach of Die Roten.
"“Julian has proven in his previous jobs that he can make players better. That was an important criterion for us. Julian is aware that we always have to develop good players at the Campus and introduce them to the pros.”“Julian is very involved, communicating with the coaches of the amateurs and the U19 and U17 teams. Player development takes time. We also took this into account in his contract period.”"
Nagelsmann has developed some great young talent during his coaching tenure at Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig. Serge Gnabry enjoyed a great loan spell at Hoffenheim under Nagelsmann, which eventually helped the German winger to flourish at Die Roten in the last three seasons.
The young German coach handed a debut to Paul Wanner earlier this year. Wanner is rated very highly by the club hierarchy, and he is expected to play a big role for Die Roten in the future. As time goes on, Nagelsmann will be expected to develop Wanner and other promising talents in the first team.
During the interview with TZ, Salihamidzic also stressed on the importance of having top German talents at the club. Die Roten always has a strong German core in the first team, so having the best German young players in Bavaria is crucial. Salihamidzic also insisted that Rekordmeister will also keep a close eye on talents across the globe.

Die Roten has improved in recruiting top young talents, but they need to improve in arranging good loan spells for these players. The Bavarian club has a very low success rate when it comes to arranging productive loan spells for the young players from the reserves team.
