The upcoming summer transfer window could see multiple departures and arrivals at Bayern Munich. The Bavarian club is reportedly looking to improve at least three areas in the squad. Work has already started to add quality in the midfield and right-back positions.
Along with the arrivals, Die Roten is also expecting high-profile departures in the summer. Niklas Sule has already sealed a move to Borussia Dortmund. The German defender decided against signing a new deal in Bavaria and signed a pre-contract agreement with Dortmund.
Corentin Tolisso is also expected to leave Rekordmeister in the summer. The German club had confirmed contract talks with the French midfielder, but there has been no update on negotiations. As things stand, the former Lyon midfielder will be leaving as a free agent in June when his contract with Die Roten expires.
Apart from these two players, there is also intense speculation around the future of Robert Lewandowski. Serge Gnabry is yet to sign a new deal despite being involved in negotiations since the start of the season. Despite both forwards having less than 18 months on the current deal, Bayern will not be forced to sell in the summer. While talking to TZ over the weekend, Herbert Hainer insisted that the project in Bavaria is attractive from the sporting and economic point of view.
"“We are still in an excellent position, both from a sporting and economic point of view. We’re confident enough to say that we’ll continue to respond to inquiries with a ‘no’ in the future.”"
Hainer is more than likely pointing towards the situation of Lewandowski. The major talking point ahead of the summer transfer window will be the future of Robert Lewandowski. He is currently the best number nine on the planet, showing incredible consistency over the last three-four seasons. Die Roten is yet to hold talks with the Polish striker regarding a new deal, which has fuelled speculation.
The Bavarian club’s interest in Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland has also raised eyebrows over the future of Lewandowski. The next couple of months will be decisive in terms of deciding the immediate future of the Polish striker.
Lewandowski may look to explore the transfer market in the summer if Bayern doesn’t offer him a new deal. However, Die Roten does have a record of not entertaining offers even when the player is looking for a move. The Bavarian club had denied Lewandowski a transfer in 2018 when he was looking to engineer a move to Real Madrid.

Hainer is spot on about the sporting ambitions of the current project at Die Roten. The German club continues to dominate the Bundesliga and remains one of the best clubs in the Champions League. However, the economic incentives of this project can be bettered by various other rich clubs in Europe. It will be interesting to see how the club hierarchy manages to maintain balance in both aspects of this project to retain and attract world-class players.
