Bayern Munich risk losing Robert Lewandowski in summer
The last couple of years has seen Bayern Munich making contract decisions that benefit them from sporting and financial points of view. The upcoming summer transfer window will involve some bold decisions made by the club.
The biggest talking point ahead of the summer window will be the future of Robert Lewandowski. The Polish striker has entered the last 18 months of his current deal. In such situations, Die Roten opens talks with players before they have less than a year left on his deal.
The public stance from the club’s hierarchy has been very positive about Robert Lewandowski. Herbert Hainer has consistently insisted that he wants Lewandowski to stay in Bavaria. However, it has been consistently reported in the German media that talks are yet to start for a contract renewal.
SportBild reiterated on Tuesday that Die Roten is deliberating contract talks, and the sticking point is likely to be the duration of the contract. The Polish striker is a prolific goalscorer at the age of 33, but a longer contract will mean that Bayern will have to keep paying big wages when he is in his late-30s.
Moreover, Norwegian journalist and footballer Jan Aage Fjortfoft has reported that Lewandowski is looking for a big move in the summer. He also added that Die Roten is eager to sign Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund, but other top clubs are currently frontrunners to sign the young striker.
SportBild has also previously reported that Manchester United will be ready to open talks for Lewandowski if he wants to leave Bavaria. The Red Devils may not be the first choice destination for Lewandowski since there are big doubts about qualifying for the next season’s Champions League at Old Trafford.
Considering the number of goals Robert Lewandowski has scored for Bayern in the last few seasons, intense speculation around his future is the last thing the Bavarian faithful would have wanted. The Polish striker certainly deserves to get much more clarity instead of just positive comments from the club hierarchy in the media.
Ahead of a crucial summer transfer window, Bayern should have handled Lewandowski’s contract renewal in a much better way. The next couple of months will see a lot of speculation if Die Roten doesn’t initiate talks with Pini Zahavi during the international break.
