The transfer plans for summer have not started on a good note for Bayern Munich. The Bavarian club couldn’t agree to a contract renewal with Niklas Sule. The German defender is set to join Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer in the summer. Die Roten has now lost out on the top transfer target that was supposed to replace Sule in the first team.
Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen is inching closer towards a move to Barcelona. The Spanish club has managed to come up with a much more attractive package than Die Roten to sign Christensen. The Danish defender is set to become a free agent when the transfer window opens in the summer.
After missing out on Christensen, Rekordmeister will have to look at alternative transfer targets to replace Sule. According to Transfermarkt, Die Roten is keeping a close eye on the contract situation of Manuel Akanji at Borussia Dortmund. The Swiss defender has rejected a contract offer from Dortmund. His current deal is set to expire in 2023.
Dortmund will have to listen to offers for Akanji when the transfer window opens at the end of the season. Manchester United has been heavily linked with a move for Akanji, so Bayern will have significant competition if they decide to move for the Swiss international in the summer.
Source! #Bayern are watching Manuel Akanji's contract situation at #BVB. The Swiss center-back has thus far refused to renew his contract that expires in 2023. BVB might have to sell the 26-year-old to prevent a free transfer to the FCB if he doesn't renew. @Transfermarkt

Akanji will be a like-for-like replacement for Sule. The Swiss center-back is 26, so his best years are ahead of him. He also has enough experience of playing in the Bundesliga since arriving at Dortmund in 2018. Dortmund will not be able to ask for a significant transfer fee for Akanji due to his contract situation, which makes him a financially feasible option for Rekordmeister.
Apart from Akanji, Die Roten has also been heavily linked with Torino’s Gleison Bremer. The Brazilian defender will be much more expensive than Akanji since his deal at Torino expires in 2024. Bremer has also been heavily linked with Inter Milan in the past couple of months.
Borussia Monchengladbach’s Matthias Ginter is also one of the options for Die Roten. The German defender will become a free agent in the summer after rejecting a contract extension from Gladbach. Ginter will be the most economically feasible option for Bayern from all other options.

The next couple of months will give a clear picture about the club’s main option to replace Sule. Meanwhile, the Bavarian club is also open to listening offers for Chris Richards. The young defender is currently thriving at Hoffenheim after going out on loan to the same club for the second consecutive season.
