For the third summer transfer window, Bayern Munich will be looking to finally solve the conundrum in the right-back position. The Bavarian club wants to add a similar threat on the right side as Alphonso Davies provides on the left side.
Die Roten has been linked with numerous right-backs throughout the season. According to Sky Sports News in the UK, Bayern is also closely following the progress of Middlesbrough’s Djed Spence. The young full-back is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest. He has been consistently scouted by Bayern this season. It remains to be seen if the German club will approach Middlesbrough to sign Spence.
The report from Sky also confirms interest from Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig in Spence. Meanwhile, Premier League clubs such as Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are also tracking the progress of Spence. Die Roten will have to move quickly, if they want to sign Spence without getting involved in a bidding war. Spence’s deal at Middlesbrough will expire in 2024.
Spence has played in numerous positions across defense, midfield, and attack for Nottingham Forest this season. However, he has been most utilized in the right-back position. The 21-year-old full-back has been involved in four goals for Nottingham Forest. Astute dribbling and good defensive awareness have been the hallmark of Spence’s performances this season.
This is not the first time Die Roten is shopping in the Championship to add quality in the full-back position. The Bavarian club signed Omar Richards from Reading FC on a free transfer last year to add more depth in the left-back positions. Richards has not played a lot this season, but he has done well in limited opportunities. After a year of adaptation in Bavaria, Richards could have a significant role to play next season.
The situation in the right-back is somewhat different. Spence may get a place in the starting XI straight away since Rekordmeister doesn’t have many options in that role. Benjamin Pavard is a much conservative full-back, and he prefers playing in the heart of the defense. Josip Stanisic still has a lot to learn in this role, while Bouna Sarr is likely to leave Die Roten in the summer.

Apart from Spence, Sport1 revealed that Bayern is following the progress of Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong. The Dutchman has a contract at Leverkusen until 2025, making him a much more expensive option. Barcelona’s Sergino Dest is another option for Rekordmeister. The German club has attempted thrice to sign the US international. It does look like Bayern is assessing multiple options before deciding the final target.
