The Ruckrunde has not started in the best possible way for Bayern Munich. The Bavarian club has won the majority of their games in 2022, but there have been some poor performances, such as the trip to Bochum a week ago. Moreover, there has been a worrying trend in Die Roten’s performances in 2022.

Rekordmeister has been scoring goals for fun, with Robert Lewandowski getting on the scoresheet in almost every game. However, the team has struggled at the other end of the pitch. Die Roten has been conceding poor goals, and clean sheets have become a rarity across all competitions.

Julian Nagelsmann has changed systems to address this issue, but there has been no significant improvement. The German coach has been using a three-man defense with Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry as wing-backs. Nagelsmann has not compromised on the attack of the team, which has led to concerns for the defenders in the squad.

According to Bild, the defenders in the first team at Bayern are worried about Nagelsmann’s insistence on playing all attacking players in the starting lineup. The defenders believe that this system consistently leaves them exposed to one vs one situations, which eventually hurts the team.

This report from Bild also confirms that numerous players in the squad want a fixed system in place ahead of crucial games of the season in March and April. Nagelsmann has held talks with senior players in the squad to get feedback from them for the recent problems faced by the team on the pitch.

Nagelsmann also reportedly wants a permanent switch to back three in the long run. However, the German coach may need some changes in the personnel to implement this system. For the time being, he may have to stick with 4-2-3-1. This formation has brought a lot of success to Die Roten in the past couple of seasons.

In the short term, Nagelsmann may have to revert to back four to get the desired results. Moreover, the German coach will be hoping that Alphonso Davies returns to complete fitness as soon as possible. The Canadian full-back helps Die Roten in achieving the right balance in attack and defense. Davies is currently on right track to recover from a minor heart problem he suffered due to coronavirus.

Apart from Davies, the return of Leon Goretzka and Manuel Neuer will also benefit Nagelsmann. Neuer has started training on the grass this week. He is expected to make his return in mid-March. Meanwhile, there is no fixed timeframe for Goretzka’s return. The German midfielder has been out for 12 weeks due to a knee injury.
