Bayern Munich: Julian Nagelsmann wants a bigger squad
The mid-season transfer window was a quiet one for Bayern Munich. The defending Bundesliga champions were linked with numerous players throughout the window, but they eventually signed no one. There was one key departure from the first team as Mickael Cuisance sealed a permanent move to Venezia.
According to Sport1, Julian Nagelsmann was very much keen on bolstering the squad midway through the season. The German coach is worried about the depth of the current squad, so he wanted to add two players. However, Julian Nagelsmann is aware of the financial restrictions due to the pandemic.
Despite Nagelsmann’s disappointment due to the lack of transfer activity in January, the German coach enjoys a very good relationship with the sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic. Both of them are very much on the same page, but Julian Nagelsmann is eager to get at least a couple of signings in the summer transfer window.
The recent run of performances and results have definitely highlighted the key areas that need addressing in the summer. The absence of Alphonso Davies has hampered Nagelsmann’s plans in the defense. There is no solid offensive full-back in the squad, so Davies becomes a very vital player for Die Roten. Benjamin Pavard can do a job in the right-back position, but he cannot provide the cutting edge in the final third.
The Bavarian club needs to finally get some success in their pursuit to find a top-quality right-back in the summer. Die Roten has been looking to address this position in the last three summer windows. Bouna Sarr did arrive from Marseille in 2020, but the Senegalese full-back has failed to establish himself as a key player for Rekordmeister.
Apart from a right-back, Die Roten will be in the market to sign a center-back to replace Niklas Sule. The German international rejected the contract offer from the club and agreed to join Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer in the summer.
The midfield department will also be an area to improve for Rekordmeister. They are currently in talks with Corentin Tolisso for a contract renewal. If there is no agreement before the end of the season, then Die Roten will need to find a replacement for him.
Salihamidzic will have his work cut out in the summer to get quality additions in these three positions. He cannot afford to fall out with another coach as his relationship with Hansi Flick was frosty due to disagreements over transfers. It is set to be a big and defining summer for Die Roten and Salihamidzic.
