Bayern Munich: Top performers in thriller against RB Leipzig
By Isaac Rivers
On Matchday 21, fans returned to Allianz Arena. They witnessed a five-goal thriller as FC Bayern Munich hosted rivals, RB Leipzig. With both sides playing an incredibly open game, Die Roten was just able to better capitalize on their opportunities than the opponent. Here are top player performances from Bayern’s 3-2 win over RB Leipzig.
Serge Gnabry
Serge Gnabry started the game on the front foot as he dominated on and off the ball. The entirety of the first half was in his control. Starting off quick, Gnabry had a rocket of a shot in the fourth minute that was deflected wide, along with a great run into the box just a minute later.
In the 14th minute, Gnabry had an inch-perfect pass across the face of the goal, but Lewandowski missed the finish by a slender margin. With a second-half performance that was equally as good, Gnabry fired a shot in the 57th minute that was deflected into the top left corner of the net, only to be ruled as an own goal for the Leipzig defender. Overall, an impressive performance for the winger Serge Gnabry.
Robert Lewandowski
Even though it wasn’t a game in which he scored a hatful of goals, Robert Lewandowski’s still put on a class performance against RB Leipzig. The visitors did their best to hold the striker back, but he was too much to handle. In the 12th minute, Lewandowski rifled a shot a goal, which was deflected perfectly to the feet of Muller for Bayern’s first goal.
After narrowly missing a rocket of a header in the 40th minute, Lewandowski got the job done just four minutes later by scoring one of the cleanest headers the Bundesliga has seen this season.
Thomas Muller
Another game, another world-class performance from Germany’s Thomas Muller. Starting with a bang, in the 12th minute Muller finished off a deflected shot coming from Lewandowski to set the pace for this goal fest. In the 31st minute, Muller fired off a rocket of a volley which could’ve been his goal of the season, but drew an excellent save from Leipzig’s Peter Gulacsi.
Just minutes later, we thought we got Muller’s second goal of the game from a well-placed header but it was unfortunately ruled out due to a foul in the build-up. Throughout the second half, Muller dominated in the final third with his graceful crosses and through balls. However, none of them were successfully finished. With a performance like this, Thomas Muller rightfully earned his spot as my Man of the Match.
Bayern Munich will now look to extend their lead atop the table with their next game against VfL Bochum on Feb. 12. They are momentarily nine points clear at the top of the points table as Borussia Dortmund plays against Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday.
