The core of the first-team squad at Bayern Munich has always involved German players. The current squad also has a strong spine of German players. However, Leroy Sane has been the only German player signed across the last three summer windows.

During last summer transfer window, one report in Germany suggested that Rekordmeister is looking at young German players to bolster the squad. Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz falls in this category.

Wirtz is enjoying a terrific campaign with Leverkusen. The teenager has been attracting a lot of interest from various top clubs in the past few months. According to Sport1, Bayern is not considering joining the bidding war for Wirtz despite retaining an interest in the young player. The youngster is planning to stay at Leverkusen until 2023.

The young attacking midfielder’s current contract expires in 2026, so Leverkusen will not be under pressure to sell him in the upcoming summer transfer window. Even if the player decides to part ways in the summer, Leverkusen will demand a fee as big as they did in the case of Kai Havertz in 2020.

Wirtz is considered one of the big talents in German football. He has already made his debut for the national team. The teenager is currently enjoying a very productive campaign with Leverkusen, contributing to 20 goals across all competitions until the end of January. Getting consistent playing time is certainly going to help Wirtz become a more rounded attacking player.

After losing out on Sane in 2016, Die Roten did manage to get him in 2020. The Bavarian club should be looking to avoid similar mistake unless they are very well stocked with top talent in a position. Wirtz will definitely go on to become a top player, so he will certainly improve Die Roten at any given time. Despite the potential of Wirtz, Bayern cannot afford him next summer since they have other areas to address.

The club hierarchy at Die Roten will be hoping that Wirtz stays at Leverkusen for at least one more season. Wirtz’s decision to stay at Leverkusen will definitely improve the chances of Rekordmeister trying to sign him in 2023.

The report from Sport1 also confirms that Rekordmeister is already thinking about Paul Wanner as the long-term solution for the attacking midfield role. Wanner recently made his senior debut for Die Roten during the first Bundesliga game of Hinrunde against Borussia Monchengladbach. The Bavarian club is looking to extend Wanner’s contract as he enters the final five months of his current deal.
