Bayern Munich: Sergino Dest will not push for a move in winter
In the last couple of years, Bayern Munich has been looking to address the right-back position in the squad. Benjamin Pavard did well in this role during his debut season, but the last 18 months have not witnessed similar consistency from the French international. Moreover, Pavard prefers playing in the heart of the defense.
Apart from Pavard, Bouna Sarr is the other senior right-back option in the squad. The former Marseille full-back has struggled to establish himself at Die Roten in the last 18 months. He got very less playing time under Hansi Flick during his debut season, while Julian Nagelsmann has preferred using other options instead of Sarr for this role.
Josip Stanisic has impressed under Nagelsmann this season, but he still has a lot to learn to become the first choice right-back at the club. To find a solution to this position, Rekordmeister has been consistently linked with numerous right-backs in the last 12 months.
Before the start of the winter transfer window, Barcelona’s Sergino Dest has been heavily linked with a move to Bavaria. However, things have gone quiet since the window opened last week. While talking to SportBild’s Christian Falk, Dest’s representative has ruled out a move to Bavaria in the winter window. Dest is currently not actively looking to leave the Spanish club.
Dest was the primary transfer target for the right-back position for Die Roten in 2020. However, Barcelona capitalised on the German club’s indecisiveness in the market to win the race for Dest. Despite losing out on Dest, Die Roten has been keeping a close eye on the young full-back’s situation at Barcelona.
The German Champions reportedly tried to sign Dest from Barcelona last summer as the Spanish club was struggling financially. However, Dest decided to stay at the Catalan club. Moreover, Die Roten also struggled to part ways with Sarr.
The arrival of Dani Alves at Barcelona in January could see a dip in Dest’s playing time during the second half of the season. It will not be a big surprise if Barcelona cashes in for Dest next summer to raise funds for other signings. One thing is sure that this is not the end of the Dest-Bayern saga. The summer window will also allow Die Roten to arrange a transfer for Sarr and make space for a new right-back.
As things stand, it will be a big surprise if Bayern signs anyone during the winter transfer window. It is difficult to get the primary targets at the halfway stage of the season. The German Champions will be laying down the groundwork for the summer acquisitions.
