Bayern Munich will have to settle for makeshift defense

Manuel Neuer will be missing the first game of the season on Friday after testing positive for coronavirus. The German goalkeeper is currently self-isolating in the Maldives. Sven Ulreich will be getting the first start of the season on Friday in the absence of Neuer.

The options in central defense are very limited for Nagelsmann. Lucas Hernandez, Tanguy Nianzou, and Dayot Upamecano have been ruled out for Friday’s game due to covid. It remains to be seen whether the French trio will be available for next week’s game. In the current situation, Benjamin Pavard is a certain starter for Die Roten on Friday. The French international will get a chance to play in the heart of the defense.

The other center-back will most likely be Niklas Sule. The German international was spotted in the first-team training after missing the team session on Wednesday. Sule’s presence in first-team training suggests that he will be fit to play against Monchengladbach.

Bouna Sarr is off to AFCON, while Pavard will be playing in the heart of the defense. Josip Stanisic is yet to recover from a muscle injury, so the right-back slot will be occupied by Joshua Kimmich. The German international returned to training this week after missing December due to covid. In the left-back position, both Alphonso Davies and Omar Richards are down with covid. Bright Arrey-Mbi has been training with the first team this week, so he will most likely play in the left-back position against Gladbach.
