The winter transfer window could witness numerous top players negotiating a pre-contract agreement with six months left on their contract. Bayern Munich is likely to lose Corentin Tolisso and Niklas on a free transfer, so the Bavarian club might also focus on a few free transfers.

Earlier this week, Borussia Monchengladbach defender Matthias Ginter confirmed that he would run down his contract and leave on a free transfer in the summer transfer window. The German international has been previously linked with a move to Bavaria, but they could face serious competition from Italy.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Bayern is also interested in Ginter but not actively working on it as of now. However, Inter Milan is actively working on bringing the German defender on a free transfer next summer. He also insists that Ginter is not the main priority for Die Roten for now.

The Bavarian club’s interest in signing Ginter will depend on how the situation with Niklas Sule unfolds. The 26-year-old defender has entered the final six months of his deal at Die Roten. While the club has opened negotiations with Sule, the German media has suggested that Sule is looking to move on in the summer.

In case Sule confirms his intention to leave in January, Die Roten may finally open talks with Ginter for a pre-contract agreement. The defending German champions have also been linked with a move for Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger, but the 28-year-old defender is reportedly much closer to Real Madrid than Die Roten. In such a scenario, Ginter could turn out to be a good alternative for Rekordmeister.

Ginter has been one of the consistent center-backs in the Bundesliga ever since moving to Gladbach from Borussia Dortmund in 2017. He has also featured regularly in the Germany squad over the past few seasons, making him a very viable and experienced defender to replace Sule in the squad.

Die Roten will have to be decisive in the next few weeks regarding the situation of Sule in the squad. If they don’t make crucial decisions, then Inter could run away with the deal for Ginter. Knowing Sule’s intentions and working quickly for a replacement should be one of the priorities for Rekordmeister during January.

The Bavarian club has many positions to address in the summer transfer window next year, which makes it difficult for them to spend money on a center-back. Moreover, Sule could end up leaving on a free transfer, so getting his replacement on a similar deal would be much more ideal in the current financial climate.
