Bayern Munich Frauen concluded their 2021 schedule with a 2-0 victory over Werder Bremen on Sunday. The visitors were able to record their ninth victory of the Frauen-Bundesliga season as they enter the winter break atop the league table.

An early goal in the 11th minute from Maximiliane Rall opened the scoring. Rall dispatched a well-placed pass from Linda Dallmann who registered her third assist of the domestic season. The second goal scored would come in second-half stoppage time as Saki Kumagai registered her second goal of the Frauen-Bundesliga season.

Leading at the winter break

Bayern sits in first place entering the winter break with a one-point advantage over second-place Hoffenheim. The leaders entering this past week, Wolfsburg, had their match against Turbine Potsdam postponed which means they will have a game in hand entering the second half of the season. Wolfsburg only trails Bayern by two points in the table so a victory in that postponed fixture against Potsdam could see them move ahead of Bayern.

With so many clubs in close proximity to one another in the table, it’s shaping up to be a very exciting race for the title in the second half of the season. In addition to Hoffenheim and Wolfsburg, Eintracht Frankfurt is very close to Bayern in the table. Frankfurt is just three points behind Bayern and they could remain a title contender in the second half of the campaign. Potsdam are just seven points adrift from the top and a strong showing from them in the coming months could see a fifth club competing for the top places.

A strong finish to 2021

Bayern encountered a difficult stretch of the season during October and November when they lost matches to Frankfurt, Lyon, and Wolfsburg. These losses affected their placing in the Frauen-Bundesliga and their UEFA Champions League group. However, Bayern responded to these defeats by going undefeated in their final seven matches of the year in all competitions. This impressive run of form has allowed them to sit atop the league table and secure a place in the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

Bayern players leading the way in goal scoring

Lea Schuller will enter the winter break as the league’s top scorer. Her nine goals in 12 appearances give her a one-goal lead over Selina Cerca of Potsdam and her teammate Rall. For Rall, her eight goals this season have put her on pace to register double-digit goals in a single season for the first time in her career. Her career-best is a nine-goal season for Hoffenheim during the 2018/19 season and it looks like she will be surpassing that number during the second half of the season.

Bayern’s next match will be on February 4th when they host SC Sand on Matchday 13 of the Frauen-Bundesliga season. In their first meeting this season, Bayern won 3-0.
