With the year coming to an end, phenomenal players and coaches across the game are rewarded for their work done throughout the last 12 months. Bayern Munich enjoyed a decent but not perfect year which saw some tremendous performances of individual players.
The Bavarian club had few nominations for multiple awards for FIFA’s Best awards that were announced on Monday. Robert Lewandowski was the definite nomination from Die Roten for the best player of the year. The Polish striker enjoyed a record-breaking Bundesliga season and also ended up winning European Golden Boot last season.
Apart from Lewandowski, Manuel Neuer has also been nominated for the Best Goalkeeper award. The German international had a fine year with Rekordmeister. Neuer has steadily established himself back in the top tier of goalkeepers in the world after a couple of injury-troubled years.
Hansi Flick brought an end to his highly successful tenure at Bayern in May. The German coach managed to retain the Bundesliga title and won the Club World Cup earlier this year. His work with Rekordmeister has been awarded a nomination for the best coach of the year award.
Lewandowski should be one of the favourites for the award. The Polish striker has been by far the best number nine in the world for the second year in a row. He bagged the award last season, and there is a strong case for him to retain the trophy this season.
The 33-year-old striker broke Gerd Muller’s record of most goals in a single Bundesliga campaign by scoring 41 goals last season. He has started the new campaign on fire with 24 goals and two assists across 17 games in all competitions.
It is a real shame that Thomas Muller missed out on a nomination for the best player of the year award. He was also left out of the top 30 list by France Football for the prestigious Ballon d’Or award. The German international has been one of the most creative players in Europe, grabbing 20 assists in the Bundesliga. Nevertheless, the Bavarian faithful will be hoping all the three representatives from Die Roten win the respective awards.
Meanwhile, Lewandowski managed to win the Golden Player Award 2021 from Italian media outlet Tuttosport for his phenomenal year. Meanwhile, there was disappointment for Jamal Musiala, Tanguy Kouassi, and Alex Timossi Andersson as they lost out the Golden Boy award from Tuttosport to Barcelona’s Pedri.
