Bayern Munich wants to strengthen right-back position
As we approach the winter transfer window, clubs start planning for the moves they will make midway through the season. The winter window is difficult for Bayern Munich as quality players are often not allowed by their parent clubs to make moves in the middle of the campaign.
Nevertheless, Rekordmeister will look at the January transfer window as an opportunistic one. The Bavarian club will look to bolster the squad in required positions. As per SportBild (via iMiaSanMia), Die Roten’s priority position to strengthen is right-back.
The German Champions will have to make space in the squad to sign a new right-back. Bouna Sarr is the player who should be ideally making way for a new full-back. However, the former Marseille defender is not keen on parting ways with Rekordmeister.
Bayern faced the same problem in summer as there were no concrete offers for Sarr, which eventually forced the club to abandon the plans to sign a new right-back. The 29-year-old defender has struggled to find playing time under Julian Nagelsmann, but a lack of offers in January could see him stay at the club.
Nagelsmann wants his wing-backs to deploy attacking full-backs. He has one in Alphonso Davies on the left side, while Omar Richards can become a good deputy for the Canadian in the long run.
On the right side, Nagelsmann has Benjamin Pavard, Sarr, and Josip Stanisic as options. All three players are not exactly attacking full-backs. Pavard prefers playing in central defense, so his long-term future is likely to be as center-back. The German coach has used back three on a few occasions with Pavard as the right center-back this season.
Stanisic has shown a lot of promise this season in opportunities he has been given by Nagelsmann. The club hierarchy also rewarded him with a new deal, which suggests that he is part of the long-term plans of Die Roten. For now, he is likely to be covered in the right-back position.
With the future of Niklas Sule uncertain, Die Roten can move Pavard in central defense if the German defender leaves in the summer. Stanisic and a new top-quality right-back should be the options on the right side of the defense while going forward. The winter transfer window will be difficult for the club to get a top-quality right-back, but Die Roten should try to resolve Sarr’s future in this window. If the former Marseille defender leaves in January, then Rekordmeister will have space in the squad to sign a new right-back in the summer.
