Bayern Munich: Jose Mourinho was eager to work in Bavaria
The few top clubs in Europe attract the best coaches in the game. Bayern Munich is part of this group of clubs as they have a history of winning big pots under the best coaches in the game. Apart from the club hiring the best managers, coaching at Bayern is also a wanted job for so many coaches.
Jose Mourinho is one of the biggest names in football due to his success across different clubs in this century. He has managed top players and clubs during his coaching career. The Portuguese won the treble with Inter Milan in 2010 and also guided Porto to the Champions League title in the early 2000s.
Mourinho also helped start a new era at Chelsea in the Premier League and helped Real Madrid stop Barcelona’s dominance in La Liga. The last few years have been poor for Mourinho by his high standards, but that didn’t stop him from putting his name in the frame to manage Die Roten.
While talking to Rai Sports (via Football Italia), former Die Roten CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge confirmed that Mourinho was very keen on joining the club. However, the Bavarian club felt that he was not the right fit and eventually decided against hiring him.
"“A few years ago, Mourinho wanted to come to Germany to work at Bayern, but we felt he wasn’t the right man for the club.“Personally, he always made a good impression on me. I hope that he can find success at Roma, because he needs to win on a daily basis.”"
The window of opportunity for Mourinho in the near past was when he had parted ways with Manchester United. The German champions decided to relieve Niko Kovac in 2019 and decided to stick with Hansi Flick as caretaker manager. Flick eventually became permanent head coach and helped the club to win the treble.
Mourinho is no doubt a box office coach and winner. However, Die Roten were right to decide against bringing him to the club. His abrasive nature results in conflict at the club, and eventually, things get worse in and around the club.
Apart from being a volatile coach, Mourinho has also struggled on the pitch in the past few seasons. His stint at Manchester United came to a painful end, while the coaching tenure at Tottenham Hotspurs lasted just over 12 months. After a good start at Roma this season, Mourinho’s men are currently going through a poor run of form.
There is no doubt that Mourinho would have won trophies at Bayern if he had been appointed as head coach. However, going by the trend of his last three-four jobs, the Special One does tend to lose his way and fall out with players.
