Robert Lewandowski scored two goals on Friday against Andorra to lift Poland to their sixth victory of the UEFA World Cup qualifying campaign. The Bayern Munich striker scored once in the first half and then added a second goal in the second half as it finished 4-1 in Andorra.

Poland sits in second place in Group I after Matchday Nine. They trail leaders England by three points and will likely finish in the second spot as they will need England to lose to San Marino on Matchday Ten, but that is a very unlikely scenario to occur.

By finishing in second place, Poland is still in the hunt for the remaining UEFA places available for the 2022 World Cup. Starting in March of 2022, 12 nations will begin the playoff rounds which will determine the final three European representatives at the competition.

The goals continue for club and country

Lewandowski’s two-goal performance increases his scoring total in the qualifying campaign to eight goals. Currently, only Memphis Depay of the Netherlands has scored more goals than the 33-year-old forward in the group stage qualifying rounds

The brace against Andorra allows Robert Lewandowski to inch closer to recording 75 goals scored for Poland. He will enter the match against Hungary on Matchday Ten needing to score only one more goal to reach 75 goals for his country. Over one-third of his goals for Poland have come in World Cup qualifying campaigns. Lewandowski has scored 29 goals in 36 qualifying appearances.

Impressively, Friday’s multi-goal performance was the third match in Lewandowski’s last four appearances for both club and country that he has scored two goals or more. He has scored a total of 28 goals in 23 appearances for both club and country this season.

Other Bayern performances on Friday

Lewandowski was not the only Bayern player to score a goal on Friday. Marcel Sabitzer scored for Austria in their 4-2 win against Israel. The midfielder registered his second goal of the World Cup qualifying campaign in the 84th minute. Although Austria will not finish as one of the top two nations in their group, they can still qualify for the playoff round due to winning their UEFA Nations League group.
