Bayern Munich: Philipp Lahm backs Manuel Neuer to play at top level until 40
In terms of personal milestones, October was a significant month for Bayern Munich skipper Manuel Neuer. After claiming the clean sheet against Hoffenheim in a 4-0 victory on matchday nine, Neuer grabbed his 300th win in the Bundesliga.
The German goalkeeper has been enjoying a good run of form for Bayern this season. Neuer has bailed out his team on numerous occasions this season. There are no signs of decline for the prolific shot-stopper as he performs brilliantly week in week out.
Along with his impeccable shot-stopping, Neuer plays a big role in the team’s buildup play. The German international’s phenomenal sweeping and passing range allows Die Roten to play a high line. Moreover, he also excels in collecting dangerous crosses, dominating the opposition in the box.
Despite turning 35 earlier this year, Neuer remains one of the best goalkeepers in the world. While speaking to Bild over the weekend, Philipp Lahm backed his former teammate’s decision to keep playing at the top level until the age of 40.
"“I actually trust Manu to do anything. He’s a great guy, a world-class goalkeeper, probably the best there has ever been. He is usually always fit. He’s a little crazy off the pitch when it comes to sports sometimes. That’s why I can imagine it very well.”"
Neuer’s contract at Die Roten currently expires in 2023. Earlier this year, reports in Germany suggested that the Neuer is open to signing a contract extension in the near future. The Bavarian club will most likely open negotiations with the veteran goalkeeper at the end of the current campaign.
There were fears about Neuer’s peak ending early after he suffered two serious injuries in 2017 and 2018. He did look shaky after recovering from these injuries. As the saying goes- form is temporary, but class is permanent. The same applied for Manuel Neuer as he got back to his best with time and played a crucial role in the treble-winning campaign under Hansi Flick.
Even though Manuel Neuer is showing no signs of decline, his playing time at Die Roten might get divided with another goalkeeper in the coming seasons. The German club reportedly considers Alexander Nubel as the long-term successor of Neuer.
Nubel is currently on a two-year loan at Monaco. The young goalkeeper will return to Bavaria in 2024. In an ideal scenario, Die Roten will want Neuer and Nubel to share game time from the 2024/25 campaign. Managing workload will be crucial for Neuer to keep playing at the top level until the age of 40. Moreover, Nubel will also need playing time to keep polishing the rough edges of the game. Neuer’s desire to play until 40 is commendable, but Bayern will have to carefully manage his playing time to ensure they get the best out of him and his successor also develops to eventually take his place.
