Bayern Munich suffered a shocking 5-0 defeat in the second round of the DFB Pokal. After falling behind 3-0 in the 21st minute, the visitors were never able to recover. Hosts Borussia Monchengladbach routed their opponents to deliver a memorable win in front of their home supporters. The loss sees Bayern exit the domestic cup competition in the second round for the second consecutive season. Here are five key stats from the defeat.

A shocking defensive performance

Entering this match, Bayern had conceded just four away goals in the Bundesliga, UEFA Champions League, and DFB Pokal this season. On Wednesday night, they surpassed that total in just one match. Bayern had been showing tremendous defensive form in recent weeks which makes this result even more shocking considering their previous defensive record in away fixtures. It remains to be seen if this will occur again in the current campaign or if this will be remembered as an anomaly in the 2021/22 season.

Yann Sommer records another terrific performance

For the second time this season, Sommer recorded eight saves against Bayern. In their first meeting of the season in August, the Swiss goalkeeper saved eight of the nine shots he faced in the 1-1 draw at Borussia-Park. On Wednesday, Sommer was able to stop all eight shots that came his way to register his fourth career clean sheet against Die Roten. Additionally, he becomes the first goalkeeper this season to prevent Bayern from scoring any goals.

Historic defeat

According to OptaFranz, this was the largest margin of defeat Bayern have suffered since 1978 when they fell 7-1 to Fortuna Düsseldorf in the Bundesliga. Although Bayern has been involved in high-scoring thrillers in recent years, the five-goal margin they lost by is certainly a rare occurrence for the club.

Monchengladbach’s impressive offensive display

Entering Wednesday’s match, Monchengladbach had been struggling to score goals as they have registered just ten goals in nine matches played in the Bundesliga. However, against Bayern, they looked like a completely different team as they scored five goals from 13 shots. It was certainly an extremely impressive offensive performance from the home side who were clinical in front of goal.

Borussia-Park proving to be a tough venue to win at

Four of Bayern’s last six trips to Borussia-Park have ended in defeat. Monchengladbach is proving to be a difficult side to get victories against on the road. At least for Bayern, this was the last trip to Borussia-Park this season as they will host the third meeting of the current campaign at the Allianz Arena on Matchday 18 of the Bundesliga season.
