Apart from the blip against Eintracht Frankfurt two weeks ago, Bayern Munich has been steadily getting better with each passing game. The last weekend saw Die Roten blow away Bayer Leverkusen by scoring five goals in the first half at Bay Arena.
The improved collective performances have also seen a gradual improvement in the individual performances for Rekordmeister. The attacking players have been taking all plaudits for scoring at least three goals every game, but the form of Niklas Sule has been equally crucial for the Bavarian club.
In the past few games, Sule has filled in for Benjamin Pavard in the right-back position. The German defender has looked home in this position despite not being a full-back by trade. In the heart of the defense, Sule has been consistently delivering quality performances throughout the campaign.
Julian Nagelsmann believes that Sule can further improve on and off the ball as he tries to get the best out of the German defender. Sule’s performances this season have also garnered praise from his teammates. While talking to Bild, Thomas Muller admitted that Sule’s qualities are very similar to former Die Roten defender Lucio.
"“When he’s on the move, he’s difficult to stop. It’s surprising when a central defender starts dribbling all of a sudden. It used to be the case with Lucio. In addition to that, it’s important that he’s stable in body duels and can pick up speed.”“He is currently doing very well again. That’s the bottom line. When he delivers these performances, then he’s a very important player for us.”"
At the start of the season, Nagelsmann had laid down the challenge in front of Sule to get back to his best. The German international has struggled for consistency since suffering a serious knee injury in 2019. However, Sule has responded brilliantly to Nagelsmann’s demands this season to establish himself as one of the first names on the team sheet.
Die Roten reportedly has doubts about handing a new contract to Sule due to his past performances and fitness issues. However, the German international is making a strong case for a new contract by delivering good performances week in week out.
As things stand, Sule is keeping all options open regarding his future. He has less than ten months on his current deal in Bavaria. The German international will be free to hold talks with interested clubs in the winter transfer window. Since he will be available on a free transfer, numerous clubs may show interest in an established international defender entering his peak years.
For now, Sule has a big role to play this season. He has got back to his best under a manager that helped his development at Hoffenheim. The Bavarian club may have to change their stance regarding contract negotiations with Sule by the end of the year if he maintains the current consistency in his performances.
