France Football recently confirmed the final 30 nominations for the annual Ballon d’Or award. Bayern Munich has only one representative on the list even though few more players from the squad deserved to be there for delivering outstanding performances throughout the last year.

The sole candidate for Die Roten in the final 30 list is Robert Lewandowski. The Polish striker is one of the favourites to win this award after enjoying a sensation goalscoring year. Lewandowski could have been already with a Ballon d’Or if France Football hadn’t cancelled the award last year due to the pandemic.

Lewandowski has already collected one award this season as he was recently handed the Golden Boot trophy for last season. The Polish striker had the most points across Europe after scoring 41 Bundesliga goals to win this award. The golden boot also underlined why Lewandowski is the best striker in the world.

Even though he has worked with Lewandowski for only a couple of months, new Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann is certain that the Poland international should win the Ballon d’Or. While talking to AZ (via Kicker), Nagelsmann heaped praised on Lewandowski and backed him to win the golden ball.

"“He deserved the Ballon d’Or last year. And in my opinion, he has to win the award too, as he has played more consistently than anyone else over the past three years.”"

Nagelsmann has made a fair point. Lewandowski has been the most consistent forward in the last three years. Ever since the summer window in 2018 when he tried to leave Bavaria, Lewandowski has gotten better with every season. He has managed 40, 55, and 48 goals across all competitions in his last three campaigns.

Along with scoring 55 goals during the 2019/20 campaign, Lewandowski also had team accolades to make his case strong last season. His goals also helped the team to win a sextuple, becoming the second European team to achieve this feat after Barcelona.

The 2020/21 campaign could have been equally brilliant in terms of team accolades if Lewandowski didn’t get injured during the knockout stages of the Champions League. Despite the injury, he managed to score 41 league goals and break the long-standing record of Gerd Muller for most Bundesliga league goals in a single season.

Critics and fans may suggest that Lewandowski had a much stronger case for winning Ballon d’Or last season than this year. However, his consistency in scoring does mean that he has been the best striker in Europe during the last 12 months. Hopefully, Lewandowski will get the flowers for his incredible performances later this year when France Football announces the winner of Ballon d’Or.
