Bayern Munich vs. Dynamo Kyiv: Five players to watch
By Daniel Garza
Bayern Munich faces Dynamo Kyiv on Matchday Two of the UEFA Champions League group stage. After defeating Barcelona just two weeks prior, Die Roten will be looking to continue their impressive start to the group stage. Bayern will be playing a Dynamo Kyiv side who drew level with Benfica in their opening fixture. The Ukrainian side is off to a great start in their domestic league and has the potential to cause the hosts trouble on Wednesday. Here are five players to watch for ahead of the match.
Joshua Kimmich
The Bayern midfielder has scored three goals in his last two Bundesliga appearances. Among those three goals was a well-placed strike against Greuther Furth in Bayern’s 3-1 victory. In addition to his recent goal-scoring form, Kimmich has continued to create scoring opportunities for Bayern. He currently leads the way for the club in goal-creating actions and has 18 shot-creating actions so far in the Bundesliga season. Against Barcelona, no other player on the pitch had as many shot-creating actions as Kimmich as the midfielder finished with six.
Viktor Tsyhankov
Dynamo Kyiv’s leading scorer in the Ukrainian Premier League has been in fine form as of late. He has scored six goals in his last six appearances in all competitions. The 23-year-old has yet to score in the Champions League this season but he did register two goals in last season’s group stage including a goal against Barcelona. If Dynamo Kyiv does find themselves generating scoring opportunities, it’s likely that Tsyhankov will be involved.
Thomas Muller
Its been a fantastic last few matches for Muller as he has scored three goals and registered two assists in his last five appearances. He was among Bayern’s goalscorers against Barcelona in their 3-0 win over the La Liga side. Based on his recent form, Muller should be one of the Bayern players leading the charge offensively.
Vitaliy Mykolenko
Mykolenko is one of Dynamo Kyiv’s bright young stars. The 22-year-old Ukraine international was one of his club’s top performers against Benfica and he has registered two assists in the Ukrainian Premier League this season. The left-back recorded three clearances and two blocked shots against Benfica which earned him a rating of 7.3. He will be tasked with keeping Bayern’s wingers from creating chances. This has not been an easy task for many clubs to do this season and it will certainly be a good test for the young left-back as he continues to develop.
Robert Lewandowski
Although his scoring streak in the Bundesliga coming to an end against Greuther Furth, that performance should be an anomaly for Lewandowksi this season. The veteran striker will be looking to bounce back at the Allianz Arena and deliver more goals for Die Roten. After his two-goal performance against Barcelona on Matchday One, more goals are sure to come on Matchday Two when Bayern hosts Dynamo Kyiv. Lewandowski should be able to find himself on the scoresheet once more if chances come his way.
