Bayern Munich has endured problems while negotiating contract extensions in the past 12-15 months. Thiago Alcantara left for a small fee since he had one year left on the current deal, while the German club couldn’t find an agreement with David Alaba for a new contract. Both players spent half of their prime in Bavaria, so there was some silver lining.

The Bavarian club had a bigger challenge ahead this summer as younger players in the squad were entering a crucial phase of their contracts. They have passed the first big hurdle by extending the contracts of Joshua Kimmich (26) and Leon Goretzka (26). Kimmich had two years left on his contract, while Goretzka had less than 12 months left on his previous deal.

With these two long-term deals, Die Roten has made sure that both German midfielders will be spending the prime of their careers in Bavaria. The midfield duo will be providing the perfect platform for Rekordmeister to remain competitive on all fronts in the coming season.

In terms of midfield composition, Die Roten will not have to worry for a long time unless there is a significant injury crisis. Kimmich and Goretzka will be the main men in the center of the park, while the club will add few more complementary midfielders to the squad instead of paying big money for superstar midfielders.

If Marc Roca comes good this season, then the Bavarian club will need to sign just one more midfielder to provide quality depth in this area of the squad. Corentin Tolisso is likely to leave on a free transfer, while Mickael Cuisance could be on his way out during the winter transfer window. Considering the situation of all midfielders, it further highlights how crucial it was to tie down Kimmich and Goretzka to long-term deals.

Kimmich and Goretzka put on a masterclass against Barcelona on Tuesday. Both of them are very well equipped in dominating games in Europe and Bundesliga. With both midfielders potentially getting better with time, Rekordmeister can consistently go all the way in the Champions League.

Apart from strengthening the midfield department in the long run, the contract renewals of Kimmich and Goretzka send a strong signal across Europe. Rekordmeister can keep hold of their key men without disrupting the wage structure.

After securing contract renewals in the midfield, the Bavarian club should now look to secure the future of forwards. Serge Gnabry is next in line for a new deal, while the club will face a difficult challenge in negotiations with Kingsley Coman. Moreover, Robert Lewandowski also has less than two years left on his contract. Reaching an agreement with these forwards will further strengthen the squad to achieve success in the present and future.
