Bayern Munich: Four best teams of different eras
Sextuple winning Bayern Munich team
Two months into the 2019/20 season, Bayern Munich was going nowhere. After a strong end to the previous campaign, Die Roten was struggling to find consistency under Niko Kovac. There were murmurs in media that there was discontent in the dressing room.
The poor results eventually led to the departure of the Croatian manager. At that point, fans probably believed that retaining domestic titles will be a good season after a poor start. Hansi Flick was given reins of the first team. There was no looking back for the German Champions once Flick hit the ground running straight away.
There were a couple of poor results in December 2019, but the team picked up form after the winter break. Players looked happy on and off the pitch, while the quality of football was entertaining and intense. Die Roten was dominating games and went on an eight-month-long winning run across all competitions.
During the Champions League run, they delivered a historic result by clinching 8-2 win against Barcelona in the quarterfinals (the heaviest defeat for the Spanish club in their history). Players spoke glowingly about Flick’s management. Bayern has been struggling to bring the CL title back to Allianz Arena since 2013, but Flick managed to do it in his first season as the club’s manager.
The team managed to win the treble and rounded it off by winning the UEFA Supercup, DFL Supercup, and Club World Cup, becoming the second club in the world to win six titles in a season. Barcelona is the other European club to achieve this feat.
Considering the mini-crisis at the start of the season for the club and the global crisis due to the pandemic, sextuple stands right up there in Bayern’s history. Die Roten managed to bring happiness for fans during the toughest year in this century. The younger players of the squad got to taste success early in their careers. Robert Lewandowski finally got his hands on the CL title after performing consistently since arriving in Bavaria. Sextuple came at an unprecedented time, so it will go down as the most remarkable achievement by a Bayern team.
