Champions League winning Bayern Munich team in 2001

Bayern Munich suffered an agonizing defeat against Manchester United in the Champions League final during the 1998/99 season. They were minutes away from winning the fourth CL title, but United scored late two goals to snatch the win from the jaws of defeat.

It was a big mental blow for the squad to lose the title in the dying minutes after dominating the game against the English side. Ottmar Hitzfield managed to pick up the deflating squad and bring them back to the pinnacle of European football after two years in 2001.

The Champions League final against Valencia was intense as both sides went toe to toe. Oliver Kahn turned out to be the hero for the German club as he delivered a heroic display in the penalty shootout against the Spanish club.

Along with the CL title, Die Roten also managed to clinch a Bundesliga title during the 2000/01 season. They missed out on a treble after getting knocked out of DFB Pokal in the second round against FC Magdeburg. It was a brilliant redemption arc for the squad that suffered the most brutal heartbreak on the pitch two years ago. With the background story of that squad in CL, the double winners from the 2000/01 season will always hold a special place in the heart of the Bavarian faithful.
